5 Tips to Ensure Applications Enable Meaningful Use

Few government programs have managed to accelerate technology adoption while engaging the C-suite so deeply like Meaningful Use. That is because achieving the Meaningful Use of electronic health records (EHRs) under the HITECH Act of 2009 allows a healthcare organization to receive payments from the federal government under the Medicare or Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs.

To receive those payments, however, each organization must be able to demonstrate Meaningful Use in over five distinct stages. In Stage 1, for example, an organization must demonstrate major EHR functionality such as the electronic documentation of a certain percentage of visits, diagnoses, and prescriptions. Organizations must also demonstrate the ability to share patient information among  providers, as well as report quality measures and public health information. July 3, 2012, was the last day for eligible hospitals to begin demonstrating Meaningful Use for the first year. Oct. 3, 2012 was the last day for eligible professionals.
