Bob Renner is one of the founders of Liaison Technologies and the company’s first employee. He earned his Master of Business Administration degree from Emory University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from California State University (Fullerton). Bob has small town beginnings, growing up in Northern California and attending a high school with only 300 students.

In a tricky economy it is exciting to be a growing company that has the ability to put people to work in high quality and interesting jobs. Thanks to the great support from both our new and long time loyal customers, Liaison has 40 new hires since the beginning of the year and plans to add almost 30 additional staff in November and December to support our rapidly growing business. At a compounded annual growth rate of approximately 50% over the last 5 years it has been a fast paced environment, and is no wonder we were feeling a little cramped in our Atlanta headquarters office over the past few months.

It is an exciting time in the market with once separate solutions and services such as MDM, EAI and B2B converging right before our eyes into a single, much more comprehensive and complete, even cloud-based service offering. Soon it will be sufficient to describe a business integration challenges without having to decompose the problem into separate piece parts and engage multiple service providers, and buy specialized software applications each with a different role to play in integration and data management. You will also not need a $250 per hour interpreter (also known as a consultant) to simply untangle this complex vendor and solution landscape before you can develop a coherent RFP.

A colleague recently introduced me to The Black Swan. Not the psychological thriller staring Natalie Portman as a ballerina seeking perfection, but author and philosopher Nassim Nicholas Taleb’s book. Among other interesting concepts, the book outlines two views of the world using the fictitious countries of Mediocristan and Extremistan. To paraphrase, in well-behaved Mediocristan the law of averages applies and the normal distribution curve is king. In Extremistan unusual and extreme events that play a significant role in the success and failure of businesses can – and do – happen.
