All the news media trucks were up and active by 2 p.m. Pacific Time the afternoon of September 23. You could see many of the key media personnel moving around as they prepared to interview the stars of the coming Emmy Awards ceremony. It was hard to get a close up for photos - most were quite blurry, actually, so the most I can show is the large tent that had been up since the previous day. Although I did get to see the “roadies” from one of the bands unload equipment. The “roadies” don't count as "stars," so no pictures there either. Sorry to disappoint.

DIA 2012 was held June 24-28 in Philadelphia PA and was the largest multidisciplinary event involved in the discovery, development and life cycle management of pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical devices and related health care products.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released the Notice of Proposed Rule Making (NPRM) for Stage 2 a couple of weeks ago. The proposed rule specifies the criteria that eligible professionals (EPs) and hospitals must be meet to qualify for Electronic Health Record incentive payments.

What a surprise to see that the HIMSS 2012 HIE Symposia was a sold-out event with more than 350 people attending to the tune of “standing-room only.” The day’s theme, “HIE: The Next Generation and Beyond”, was not only about the future of HIEs, but also covered the difficulties they have endured as the search for a sustainable model continues.

Does it really matter what kind of conference people attend when it’s held in Miami, Florida? The truth is, “destination conferences” do attract lots of attendees, so the challenge is to make sure they stay indoors during daylight hours so they can learn new things. From the exhibitor perspective, we have an opportunity to talk with these potential customers to understand their pain-points and determine how we can help.

As reported in this week’s Wall Street Journal blog, the lack of information exchange is one of the key obstacles to the success of digital health records. As it is known and reiterated in the article, there is a lot of government funding being thrown at solving the problem, but that money will surely dry up before full connectivity is reached throughout the healthcare ecosystem.

It’s tough to run most businesses without revenue, and in most cases difficult to run a business without customers. In the HIE world, it’s the same with the exception that they can do without those when they have government funding. But funding eventually runs out and this means that they must generate revenue through “customers” – providers, payers, patients or other third parties like life sciences organizations for secondary use of information. The good news is that HIEs, like traditional businesses, can sustain themselves when they have lots of customers; the bad news is they can’t when they lack customers.

With more than 630 attendees from 200 plus health-related companies present at the Georgia Health IT Summit, it's easy to see Georgia is making a difference in providing better overall care for patients. Thanks to Georgia Tech and a large IBM (formerly Internet Security Systems) office in our city establishing successful roots in security, in conjunction with Georgia’s recent ranking as the movie film capital second to Hollywood, our state is positioned for continued growth, notably in the area of health IT.

Most people that I have spoken with since since April, when Liaison Technologies acquired nuBridges, know that I’ve been spending a lot of time in the healthcare vertical. Just as security within the retail and financial services verticals was key to nuBridges success during the past 6 years, healthcare is an equally, if not bigger opportunity in that vertical alone. It not only includes all of the security needs that we provided at nuBridges – not just protecting credit card information, but rather protecting all patient and other sensitive data – but adds the capabilities of integration and data management to the mix, two areas where Liaison Technologies excels.

We’re celebrating what? This week is National Health IT Week, which means we’re here to confirm that the entire healthcare community is united as one – whether provider, health plan, health information exchange, or patient – in recognizing the importance technology plays in improving healthcare delivery in America. From a patient perspective, while my own health is pretty good, there’s no lack of horror stories where the absence of collaboration between providers and other entities is weak to non-existent, or the lack of electronic records (or ability to access them) is the same – very limited. For the very best in patient healthcare and efficient healthcare practices, this needs to change.

Information is power: to both the healthcare recommenders, the providers and the decision-makers, and you the patient. True that we often leave the decisions to our doctors, but it is often only you who understands the entire picture. Towards this end, a huge goal of health informatics is to "increase public capacity to access, analyze and disseminate data and information."
