In October I blogged about the role that data requirements are playing in driving new ACO spending, a key metric in evaluating how quickly ACOs can achieve their ultimate goal of better, cost-effective healthcare delivery. Recently, the Commonwealth Fund released a report that included healthcare data management in its list of factors that assess ACO readiness.

You know it's going to be a day filled with interactive dialog when the opening speaker says "Healthcare today is all about brand, money and ego and that needs to change". We need to get more competitive on technology transfer (get innovations to the bedside quicker), need to create a safe environment for doctors to practice where they don't fear lawsuits in everything they do (or don't do) and have courage to stay hungry in making change (there's lots of barriers to overcome).

The Liaison Healthcare Informatics' team travelled to Washington, D.C. to participate in the 2012 eHealth Initiative National Forum on Data & Analytics in Healthcare. The forum was in the picturesque Gaylord Hotel & Convention Center in Washington DC overlooking Potomac River. Some of the panel discussion topics were the challenges to using secondary data, transforming data into healthcare intelligence, and leveraging analytics to facilitate accountable care. It was interesting to hear different viewpoints and experiences related to connecting, aggregating and analyzing data to meet clinical and financial performance goals.

Where does cloud computing fit in the healthcare industry? I recently read a Government HealthIT article regarding the benefits of cloud-based computing for hospitals and health systems, which answered just that. It also offered great insight into Liaison Healthcare’s specialization of solving cloud-based challenges that span across all areas within the healthcare and life sciences industries.

We all know the old adage, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going” and in many instances it means that when times are difficult, people rise up to the challenge. But taken another way, it also means that if people aren’t as tough as they appear to be, they run from the situation as in “When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping!” So what’s the case for health information exchanges (HIEs)?

While many conferences struggle to attract enough qualified participants, Bio-IT World Conference & Expo is an example of a conference that continues to grow by leaps and bounds in terms of both conference events and the number of attendees. With 12 tracks, it covers the gamut of how technology helps to leverage data, all in the name of transforming medicine. It is especially of interest to Liaison how these organizations are moving forward to figure out how to take advantage of the vast amount of information available to them, something that, for the most part, been stovepipe and neglected. Sessions on cloud computing and HIT solutions for personalized medicine and informatics were often standing room only and the keynote speaker required an “overflow” room for the first time.

Having just returned from the HIMSS conference in Las Vegas, I was able to gain some interesting insight and talk to industry leaders at the show about how meaningful use incentives are affecting the adoption of electronic health records. What a surprise to see that the HIMSS 2012 HIE Symposia was a sold-out event with more than 350 people attending to the tune of “standing-room only.” The day’s theme, “HIE: The Next Generation and Beyond”, was not only about the future of HIEs, but also covered the difficulties they have endured as the search for a sustainable model continues.

Does it really matter what kind of conference people attend when it’s held in Miami, Florida? The truth is, “destination conferences” do attract lots of attendees, so the challenge is to make sure they stay indoors during daylight hours so they can learn new things. From the exhibitor perspective, we have an opportunity to talk with these potential customers to understand their pain-points and determine how we can help.

As reported in this week’s Wall Street Journal blog, the lack of information exchange is one of the key obstacles to the success of digital health records. As it is known and reiterated in the article, there is a lot of government funding being thrown at solving the problem, but that money will surely dry up before full connectivity is reached throughout the healthcare ecosystem.

It’s tough to run most businesses without revenue, and in most cases difficult to run a business without customers. In the HIE world, it’s the same with the exception that they can do without those when they have government funding. But funding eventually runs out and this means that they must generate revenue through “customers” – providers, payers, patients or other third parties like life sciences organizations for secondary use of information. The good news is that HIEs, like traditional businesses, can sustain themselves when they have lots of customers; the bad news is they can’t when they lack customers.
