The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released the Notice of Proposed Rule Making (NPRM) for Stage 2 a couple of weeks ago. The proposed rule specifies the criteria that eligible professionals (EPs) and hospitals must be meet to qualify for Electronic Health Record incentive payments.

Having just returned from the HIMSS conference in Las Vegas, I was able to gain some interesting insight and talk to industry leaders at the show about how meaningful use incentives are affecting the adoption of electronic health records. Recently, stage one of the meaningful use incentives was implemented and stage two was just announced while we were at the conference.

What a surprise to see that the HIMSS 2012 HIE Symposia was a sold-out event with more than 350 people attending to the tune of “standing-room only.” The day’s theme, “HIE: The Next Generation and Beyond”, was not only about the future of HIEs, but also covered the difficulties they have endured as the search for a sustainable model continues.

Does it really matter what kind of conference people attend when it’s held in Miami, Florida? The truth is, “destination conferences” do attract lots of attendees, so the challenge is to make sure they stay indoors during daylight hours so they can learn new things. From the exhibitor perspective, we have an opportunity to talk with these potential customers to understand their pain-points and determine how we can help.
